Elsbeth J. Crusius is accomplished attorney with a strong background in municipal law, land use, zoning, municipal tax appeals and public entity defense. She is licensed to practice law in the State of New Jersey, United States District Court, District of New Jersey and the State of Vermont.
Ms. Crusius grew up in Hackensack, New Jersey, where the county seat and her office are located. A graduate of the University of Vermont with a B.S. in Forest Biology, she earned her Juris Doctorate from Pace University School of Law in 2006. Following her graduation, she was admitted to practice law before the State and Federal Courts of New Jersey in 2007 and Vermont in 2016. In 2010, she graduated from the Justice Morris Pashman American Inn of Court.
Prior to her practicing law, Ms. Crusius served as the Director of Legislation and Policy to State Senator Paul A. Sarlo, during which time she drafted bills, compiled legislative reports, worked with subject matter experts, and guided legislation from concept to law. She was also the outreach coordinator for the New Jersey Highlands Council where she worked directly with the local governments, the State Legislature, Governor and Federal Officials promoting the implementation of the New Jersey Highlands Water Protection and Planning Act of 2004.
Ms. Crusius is a skilled municipal prosecutor and has appointments to several Bergen County municipalities and is currently the municipal prosecutor for the Township of South Hackensack, the City of Hackensack, and the Borough of Fair Lawn. Additionally, she serves as the alternate prosecutor for several other Bergen County municipalities, including Cresskill, Garfield, Englewood, Ridgewood, and Closter. Since 2008, Ms. Crusius has been serving as the attorney to the East Rutherford Board of Health.
Staying engaged in what takes place is Trenton is still important to Ms. Crusius and, as such, she serves as the co-chair of the Legislation Committee of the Bergen County Bar Association. Moreover, she is a Trustee and former Vice President of the Bergen County Bar Foundation, where she functions as the chair of several committees. Since 2009, Ms. Crusius has been a judge for the Vincent J. Apruzzese Mock Trial Competition.
Some of her other notable achievements include being a former member of the Executive Committee of the New Jersey State Bar Association Young Lawyers’ Division; a member of the New Jersey State Municipal Prosecutors’ Association; and is a member of Hackensack UNICO. Appointed by the County Executive, she served five years as a member of the Bergen County Open Space, Recreation, Farmland & Historic Preservation Trust Fund Advisory Board and served as a member of the Bergen County Environmental Council. Ms. Crusius has volunteered her time with both the Domestic Violence Legal Advocacy Project Alternatives to Domestic Violence and the Bergen Bike Tour which raises money for the Volunteer Center of Bergen County and Tomorrow’s Children as well as at Starlight Farms where she worked with disabled children undergoing hippotherapy.
